Ernst Pittenauer

Ernst studied at the University of Vienna Pharmacy starting 1982. He received his master degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1989 (title: Mass Spectrometric Investigation of Monosubsituted Pyridazines) from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Prof. Gottfried Heinisch) in close collaboration with Prof. Erich Schmid and Dr. Günter Allmaier (Institute of Analytical Chemistry, University of Vienna). For his doctoral thesis (title: 252Cf-Plasma Desorption Mass Spectrometry of Biomolecules) he moved to the Institute of Analytical Chemistry dealing with the analysis of peptides and proteins, structural analysis of bacterial cell walls constituents (peptidoglycan of E. coli, cyanelles of Cyanophora paradoxa, Thermus thermophilus and Deinococcus radiodurans) and analysis of various classes of lipids (triacylglycerols, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids) and of carbohydrates. This work was again performed under the supervision of Prof. Erich Schmid and Dr. Günter Allmaier and finished by 1991.

Between 1991 and 1994 Ernst worked as contract research assistant at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry (University of Vienna) continuing and finishing his research in bacterial peptidoglycan analysis as visiting scientist in the laboratory of M. A. de Pedro (Universidad Autonoma, Campus de Cantoblanco, Madrid, Spain) and in lipid as well as in carbohydrate mass spectrometry.

Between 1995 and 2003 Ernst worked as a mass spectrometry instrumentation specialist in the Federal Office and Research Center for Agriculture introducing MS/MS for the detailed structural analysis of triacylglycerols (collaboration with Michael L. Gross, Washington University, St. Louis, MO, USA) by tandem sector mass spectrometry and LC/MSn for the detection and quantification of controlled substances (i. e. antibiotics and hormones) in animal food stuff by ion trap MS.

In 2003 Ernst (re)joined the research group of Prof. Günter Allmaier at the Vienna University of Technology as a staff scientist being responsible for the analytical instrumentation. He continued his research interest in the field of tandem mass spectrometry for structural elucidation of


-       Tricacylglycerols and glycerophospolipids by MALDI tandem TOF-mass spectrometry (collaboration with Dr. Pavel Rehulka, Czech Acacdemy of Sciences, Brno and later on University of Olomouc, Czech Republic)

-       Glycolipids from Crocus sativus L. (crocins) with respect to carbohydrate- and aglycon-portion as well as their non-covalent interaction with amyloid peptides in the gas-phase (collaboration with Prof. Anthony Tsarbopoulos, GAIA Research Center, Athens, Greece)

-       Product ions of pharmacologically active small molecules for creating a searchable mass spectrometric data base (collaboration with Dr. Robert Mistrik, HighChem Ltd., Bratislava, Slovak Republic)


Other major research interests are in the field of instrumental development tandem TOF-technology with special emphasis to precursor ion selectivity and product ion resolution for biological applications.
