Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)

Back in 2003 we introduced a new, simple but most effective, route for the synthesis of SERS active silver colloids based on the reduction of silver nitrate with hydroxylamine. The paper describing this synthesis has been cited over 300 times and the colloid is nowadays often referred to as the “Leopold-Lendl” colloid. We could show that synthesis of this colloid can even be performed in an acoustically levitated nano-droplet. Currently, we are investigating the possibility of performing photo-induced reduction of silver nitrate as we feel that this method has substantial advantages when it comes to establishing SERS as a sensitive and robust detection principle in micro-fluidic systems including capillary based separation techniques.
