The Solid State Electrochemistry and Electroceramics Laboratory deals with mass and charge transport in ceramics (e.g. ion conduction) and electrochemical reactions in/on ionic solids. Thus two core topics of the field of solid state ionics are in our focus of research. The main goals can be summarized as follows:

  • Contributing to a better fundamental understanding of electrochemical reactions on oxides such as oxygen reduction, hydrogen oxidation or water splitting
  • Improving the knowledge on charge transport and defect chemistry in complex ionic materials such as oxide thin films or ferroelectric ceramics.

Even though a substantial part of our work is basic research aiming at an in-depth understanding of materials properties, there are strong links to numerous applications such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs), gas sensors, ferroelectric devices, memristors, etc.

Main ingredients of our research activities

  • Cooperations with experienced partners at TU Wien and worldwide enabling direct access to many sophisticated additional experimental tools

  • In-depth experience in modeling by finite element methods of equivalent circuits
